ONE TOPIC ASSIGNMENT AND RATIONALE Rationale for Assignment In the business world, typically, you are asked to present information in your area of expertise, not random topics you go research once asked to speak. This understanding comes from my personal experience as an author and public speaker of Middle Eastern culture. I have done over 800 speaking engagements, some informative, some persuasive and some even entertaining. But all were on the same topic: The Middle East. Hence the rationale for my use of a "one topic" for this course Task Description Each student is to determine ONE general topic that they find of interest to utilize for several assignments throughout the course, including all speeches (except your introduction speech) Keep in mind when selecting your ONE topic that it needs to be a topic that would lend itself to informative, persuasive, and special occasion speech efforts. Once Again, let me reiterate you are to select "one tople" on which you will craft ALL of your speeches this semester. If your speech topic changes between speeches, point deductions will result. Formulate a central idea (thesis) that is appropriate for the specific purpose identified for your informative speech. For example, "Today I would like to share with you the three steps necessary to achieve and maintain good dental hygiene." 5. How will you approach your "one topic" persuasively? 6. Formulate a specific purpose statement for a persuasive speech on your one topic. For example, "To persuade my audience to employ good dental hygiene in their daily lives." 7. Formulate a central idea (thesis) that is appropriate for the specific purpose identified for your persuasive speech. For example, "Evidence clearly shows that it is imperative to maintain good dental health to live longer, so my goal is to persuade each of you to maximize your dental health." 8. How will you approach your "one topic" from a special occasion speech viewpoint? 9. Formulate a specific purpose statement for a special occasion speech on your one topic. For example, "To commemorate the life and achievements of Dr. John Harris, founder of the world's first dental school." 10. Formulate a central Idea (thesis) that is appropriate for the specific purpose identified for your special occasion speech. For example, "We come together today to celebrate and admire the achievements of Dr. John Harris, the world's first dental school founder
