There are five different forms of power. The first one is legitimate power. This includes managers who obtain compliance primarily because of their formal authority to make decisions. When used as a positive power, this form can be effective for achieving results. It provides order and a clear purpose. It could be used in a negative way in which employees feel threatened into action. The next form of power is reward power. This is when an individual or organization can obtain compliance by promising or granting rewards. This form of power motivates the employee to go the extra step since they know they will be getting something worthwhile out of it. In order for reward power to achieve production, the employee must feel as if the benefit is worth more than what they would have to sacrifice to do the task. Also, it is important that the company fulfills its promises. The next is coercive power. This is the ability for someone to make threats of punishment and deliver actual punishment. When someone knows they could get in trouble for doing something, they will avoid doing it thus, making them focus on what they are actually supposed to be doing. The next form is expert power. This is when someone has a certain level of knowledge or information that gives them authority. This power allows experiences from the past to help in current situations. It also passes knowledge down to other people so they are able to learn as well. The last form of power is referent power. This is when personal characteristics and social relationships are the reason for compliance. This can occur when a boss is likable and respected by their employees, when someone has a certain trait that automatically gives them this power, or through providing connections
