Oppression: Examining An "Ism" Important to Me Task: As we have discussed in class and as outlined in the posted readings in SWRK 1006 A SS 2021, a reason many citizens come to be in need and often need the support of helping professionals working in the Social Welfare system is oppression and oppressive ism behaviours that exist in society today. This assignment is designed to help you examine and consider a form of oppressive ism behaviours, what it is, what the current social policy decision makers are doing to respond, and what role helping professionals can play in supporting those who are oppressed by this ism. Your paper should include:

Part 1: Examining of an Oppressive ism Behaviour 1. Define and explain what that oppressive ism behaviour is. 2. Discuss, with examples, which of the five types of oppression enable this ism behaviour to exist in Canadian society.

Part 2: Addressing an ism important to me 3. Research and discuss the current political platforms of the federal political parties (Conservative, Liberal, New Democrat, Green, Peoples Party) and their proposals to address the ism you are discussing. 4. If you had the opportunity to influence the federal election and recommend a proposal to address the ism you are discussing, what would be your policy recommendation. Be specific.

Part 3: Taking Action as a Helping Professional 5. Since we are not social policy decision makers, we can all still make a difference in addressing the ism that is important to you. Discuss what role you think helping professionals can provide to support people who are oppressed by this ism and what helping professionals can do to address this.

Assignment format: Your paper will be 3 to 6 pages in length (not including cover page and reference page). A shorter or longer paper could result in reduced grade. This assignment must be typed in Word using APA format Times Roman font only. An abstract is not required
