Question:
This course is focused on human flourishing and we’ve talked about different ways in which the biblical text discusses what it means to be human. Talking about a text is one thing. Exploring original texts is best (it’s generally a good practice to be familiar with the text before reading what others say about it).
- Second, write down your answer to this question: Why does a biblical understanding of what it means to be human matter to me?
Read the accounts of creation in Genesis 1 and 2.
What similarities do you notice between the two accounts?
What differences do you notice between the two accounts?
What else do you notice?
What aspects of being human are not described or addressed in these accounts?
What are the key phrases or ideas?
Go to biblegateway.com and read Genesis 1 & 2 in three different versions of the Bible (see the search tab at the top right where you can select different versions). Record each version and take a few notes about what you notice re: any differences in emphasis, wording, etc.

Now go online and begin exploring what biblical scholars have to say about the differences between Genesis 1 & 2 regarding the creation of humans. Take notes about the different perspectives you find, who wrote them, and record questions that surface for further research.
Stop and write a one-page guided response to the three questions below (one new paragraph per question). Do not include the questions in your response; just write a new paragraph for each (approximately a third of a page per question). Please write in full sentences, not bullet points. Submit your notes (above) with your reflection.
What has this exercise taught me about the Bible and how to understand it? Give an example.
What have I learned about what the Bible does and does not communicate in Genesis 1 & 2 about being human?
How has this study influenced my understanding of what it means to flourish as a human?

ON YOUR OWN/EXTRA/OPTIONAL FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: Go to the back of your Bible, if you have a concordance / word search, and look up and read all the verses that include the following words: body, soul, spirit, mind. Note the ones that you think are relevant (this is easier to do using word searches at biblegateway.com)
Based on everything you’ve read, summarize your observations and questions. Consider: Was there a consistent portrayal of what humans are made of? What gives humans life? Are there cases where soul and spirit are used interchangeably, etc.? Identify questions you want to explore further and what sources you might want to consider or people you might want to talk to.
