Outcome: Critically review your resume to develop a deep understanding of how your professional identity is articulated through the document. Ultimately, this process should help me understand the why behind your choices in developing your resume and the questions you currently have about the document.
Part One - Annotate Resume
You are to develop an annotated resume identifying its critical components, commenting on your reasoning and considerations in its development. What is annotating: The process of adding marks and notes to explain or comment on a document. It is purposeful and encourages you to take a close analysis of the document. When you return to the document, your notes should help you identify relevant information. The steps for annotating your resume include
Step one - Develop a legend for how you will identify each competency (except career management), skills, and attributes
Step two Identify the competencies
Step three Identify skills
Step four Identify attributes
Step five Make a minimum of 6 comments connected to any of the items from steps 1-4. Consider these ideas when developing your comments:
Do you have strong enough evidence of the competencies, skills, or attributes you have included in your resume to show that you embody that competency, skill, or attribute?
Do you think the competency, skill, or attribute is geared toward the type of position you have selected and the career pathway you have considered?
Any item that you would like to share your reasoning for inclusion.
Commentary on items in your resume you would like to reconsider especially as it relates to tailoring your resume to a more specific position or industry. You might want feedback in connection to your comment.
Questions you have for me about any portion of your resume; this is where I can focus on feedback
Any commentary on the visual layout you find important to share and areas where youd like feedback.
Consideration for how to annotate: This can be accomplished by developing a legend and using tools in Word such as highlighting, underlining, comment feature, superscript notations, or you can describe your annotations on a separate page and list them numerically with a short description afterward.
You can use different techniques to identify components: Options are circles, boxes, underlining, multiple colors, and so on. The more techniques you use to annotate the text, the easier it will be to find specific types of information.
For example, you may want to circle skills, underline items of critical importance, and place parenthesis around items you want to improve.
You can use different color highlighters to identify text relevant to competencies. You can also use different color highlighters to identify other items you want to identify as important.
You can use callouts or boxes connected to a specific section with explanations of why you are noting the text.
Part Two - Reflection
Provide a critical reflection for each of the following questions.
How well does your resume articulate the competencies, skills, and attributes you have acquired and are necessary for your chosen occupation?
How well does your resume provide a clear understanding of your professional identity?
What you have learned from the annotation process and how you will adjust and strengthen your resume.
