Padding may not always be appropriate. For example, one might wish to store the encrypted data in the same memory buffer that originally contained the plain$-$text. In that case, the cipher$-$text must be the same length as the original plain$-$text. We saw the use of cipher$-$text stealing in the case of XTS$-$AES to deal with partial blocks. The figure below shows the use of cipher$-$text stealing to modify the CBC mode, called CBC$-$CTS$.$
