Understanding early childhood training within school psychology is important for three reasons. First, there have been calls to increase the early childhood support school psychologists provide (e.g.,NASP, 2015). Second, in over half of U.S. states, school psychologists are explicitly credentialed to provide early childhood services (ECPC, n.d.). Therefore, school psychologists may be required to work in early childhood settings as a function of their role and responsibilities, necessitating an understanding of early childhood and related systems (e.g., Early Intervention programs). Finally, all school psychologists need to understand the early developmental foundations that influence later functioning, regardless of the population they support. Although arguably graduate coursework is not the only way to obtain training within a given area of practice, the results of the present study suggest that early childhood is not a large, and arguably insufficient, focus of school psychology graduate training. Ultimately every graduate program needs to evaluate how additional early childhood content fits into their training program, but the present study suggests that intentional consideration around this content is warranted.
