Nursing home administrators operate in an increasingly complex system. Healthcare trends are changing in all aspects including legal, ethical, organizational, technical and decision making is inherent to all these functions. Decision making is a process of choosing the best alternative to achieve individual and organizational objectives. Identifying and using the decision-making process help administrators to make more effective decisions.Various decision making models can be used to achieve quality decisions As per the model DECIDE Decision making process involves first defining a problem then focus on problem-solving to eliminate barriers, establishing a criteria, consider all alternatives while choosing the best one and then developing and implementing the plan of action to achieve organizational goals. Making timely decisions is important but also being able to prioritize which decisions need to be to made first and which ones can wait is also important. Decisions that can jeopardize residents or facility, can cause harm or neglect to residents should take priority versus deciding which candidate to hire among the interviewees.
One of the nursing homes that I worked for had an incident where the resident was sent to the hospital with serious injuries and later expired. The administrator was not able to decide in timely fashion that this needed to be reported to DOH which caused the facility a serious Citation called Immediate Jeopardy. The facility had to pay thousands of dollars as fine and submit Allegation of Compliance to remove the tag. Later the facility had to submit a full plan of correction to be in compliance. Later I learnt that if administrators are unsure of making decisions whether the incident is reportable as per DOH guidelines they can report it immediately and have 5 days to investigate and make any changes if needed.
Every decision made by healthcare administrators can impact a patients care and experiences hence it is imperative for nursing home administrators to make quality decisions in timely manner.
