PHYSICS 241/261 LABORATORY PRACTICAL EXAM, 45 minutes
There are 5 tasks listed below. After you have completed a task, write your answer in the space provided and raise your hand
to have the TA check your result. Alternatively, if you have decided that you cannot setup the circuit, you may raise your
hand and ask the TA to do the setup for you. You will receive one of the following grades after you have raised your hand.
*0 points: You were unable to perform any aspect (setup or measurement) of the task. *6
points: You were able to setup the
equipment, but got the wrong answer, OR, you asked the TA to setup the equipment and you made the measurement and got the
correct answer. You may ask to have your setup graded and corrected before taking the measurement. If unit is incorrect you
will get only 3 out of 6, even if the number is correct. *12
points: You setup the equipment correctly and arrived at the right
answer. If unit is incorrect you will get only 9 out of 12, even if the number is correct but a bad measurement with correct units
is a ZERO.
Equipment: DMM, Oscilloscope, DC power supply, Function generator, Lead wires, and the Test box as a number of labeled
plugs. There is one 1000 resistor (R3). Unknowns include 2 resistor ( R1 & R2), a capacitor, C, and an inductor, L. Between
plugs A & C is an unknown voltage. Between plugs B & C is a square wave with an unknown frequency.
Tasks:
1. Put unknown resistors R1 and R2 in series. Place this combination in parallel with
resistor R3. Use the DMM as an Ohmmeter to measure the equivalent resistance of the
circuit. [Setup Excludes wiring to meter]
2. Use THE CURSOR FUNCTION ON the oscilloscope to determine the frequency of
the square wave between terminals B and C of the test box. (Press and hold down the
button on the box to activate.)
[Setup Includes wiring to Oscilloscope]
3. Construct the circuit at the right. Set the output of
the DC power supply to 6 volts. (Set using the DMM)
Determine the resistance of R2 by a SINGLE
additional voltage measurement. Do not make the
measurement using the DMM as an Ohmmeter or an
Ammeter! [Setup Excludes wiring to meter]

4. Use the digital multimeter to measure the potential difference between terminals A
and C on the test box. (Press and hold down the button on the box to activate.)
[Setup Includes wiring to meter]
5. Measure the inductance of the inductor in the test box. Use the test box, the function
generator and the oscilloscope. [Setup Excludes wiring to scope]
