Progressive case: Internal analysis

Consider the "Progressive" case. Perform a complete VRI analysis for a single material primary capability. Complete data for the four main industry firms from 1995 to 1999 must be used in your internal analysis. In other words, emphasize State Farm, Progressive, Geico, and Allstate. Designate Progressive as the focal firm. You will need to use Exhibits 5-8 and perform the analysis over time.

1. V analysis:

Identify ( 5 words) a primary material capability that all firms in the focal industry possess. In one sentence, what is this capability? Also, where is this capability located (i.e.,)? V or not V?

2.R analysis:

a. For the Question 1 capability, is Progressive S, W, or P vis-a-vis its key rivals in 1999? b. What is the magnitude (i.e., positive or negative number) of Progressive's S, W, or P in 1999? Show all computations. R or not R?

3. I analysis:

a. For the Question 1 capability, plot the magnitude of Progressives S, W, or P for 1995 1999. In short, plot Year (X-axis) versus Progressives S, W, or P vis-a-vis its key rivals (Y-axis) for each year. Review your plot carefully and discuss your conclusions in 3.b.

b. If Progressive's capability (identified in Question 1) in 1999 is:

i. S: Did Progressive for example imitate the strongest firm? Is a rival for example imitating Progressive? Explain and show all computations.

ii. W: Is Progressive for example imitating the strongest firm? Did a rival for example imitate Progressive? Explain and show all computations.

iii. P: Explain and show all computations.

iv. a(3.b.i), (3.b.ii), (3.b.iii) cannot all be correct. In short, a correct (3.a) plot and correct interpretation of said plot will suggest which one case (i.e., 3.b.i, 3.b.ii, or 3.b.iii) merits a response.
