For this assignment, you will choose a style of music, describe its general musical characteristics, then choose two pieces of music that fit into that style and describe how they conform to the characteristics of the musical style. Process: Step 1. Choose a style of music and describe its general musical characteristics. When listening for "style," what are you listening for? What separates, for example, "rock and roll" from "hip hop?" Each uses rhythm, harmony, melody, texture, etc., but of course they use these elements in different ways. The differences in the ways that musicians use musical fundamentals is of course what separates one style from another. For step one, choose one style of music. Then, in one paragraph describe the general characteristics of the style in terms of its musical elements. In doing so, be sure to describe typical texture, melody, harmony, form, or any other musical elements that are usually present in each style. You can also mention instrumentation, but it is not necessary to do so. Take note: this description of style is about the music itself, not the lyrical content. In your description of the musical style, focus on the music, the music, and the music. Please do not include any mention of what the lyrics in a particular style are usually about.
