Empowerment is when someone takes ownership of a specific job, task, etc. The person it is passed off to gets to decide how it is completed and when. I felt the most empowered as an electrician who was given all the decision-making capability of rebuilding industrial equipment. I made every decision, from design to what products I wanted purchased to the timeline for the job. I could not get enough of the projects, so I constantly looked for ways to improve the next project.
Empowerment, for me, is about taking control of a situation when major breakdowns occur at work. It's about the confidence and trust my boss has in my team to handle the issue. When he entrusts me with the responsibility to complete the job, I've noticed that I can reciprocate that trust to my team. Trust is the key factor that contributes to this sense of empowerment. When trust is passed down, it's almost contagious, and the commitment to not let each other down becomes even stronger.
Promoting empowerment can be done in many ways. Encouraging open communication by active listening can help create an atmosphere where team members can safely discuss their needsbrainstorming about tasks or projects can encourage team members to share ideas (Goetsch, 2020-05-08). Suggestion boxes can be used to collect employee feedback. Educational programs can be promoted to develop employees' skills and knowledge levels.
