A data fabric is a big data design framework (not a technology) that integrates multiple data sources into a unified management solution. It is an end-to-end data integration that allows for a more consistent user experience, which is agnostic to where the data is stored, how it is stored, or what medium the data is stored in. It is accessible from anywhere, real-time and provides organizations with a method to utilize data with integrated machine learning and AI based systems to update their processes very quickly.
To illustrate how different data fabric is to data visualization, data fabric is an architectural concept that applies across the entire data ecosystem. Data visualization is a window into a particular subset of data in an organization. Data visualization is part of a data fabric when it is applied to an organization's entire data set. " A data fabric can allow decision-makers to view this data more cohesively to better understand the customer lifecycle, making connections between data that didn't exist before" (IBM, n.d).
Some considerations for implementing a data fabric include:
Storage management: Data stored at elastic scale with necessary data governance to make it easily accessible to the right entity
Applications and services: Development of user interfaces that can access the data required across the entire organization
Transport: Data can be easily transported across time zones securely
Endpoints: Access points can access real time insights
Security: Data is secure in storage and in transport
Ecosystem development: Data can be normalized from different data sources in line with the company's data catalog (Tibco, n.d).
Data Fabric solves the problems of organizational data silos. This graphic below illustrates the framework and how it relates from data collection to a presentation later to data consumers. For our major, it is important to be aware of current and emerging new frameworks that look to shape how large entities like corporations and governments are thinking about integrating different data sources and combining the data to make policy and derive at new initiatives for the marketplace.
For example, I am the tech lead for our knowledge graph that drives performance-based internet advertising. We ingest billions of data points daily, that are transformed into signals that help internet advertisers and publishers spend their budgets at targeted audiences. Our graph though and associated technologies around it could not be considered a data fabric as it is isolated within its own data silo. If my company were to introduce a data fabric framework, my product could see exponential growth but because of organizational silo's that will not happen.
