However, since the golf ball manufacturing process is very complex with many interactions, senior management wishes to examine the entire process and measure the final golf ball diameter variations. The primary Y metric will be the standard deviation of golf ball diameter $($note: standard deviation $=$ the square root of the variance$).$ Also, Minus$1$ has a robust data collection system from which it was determined that the standard deviation of the golf diameter is currently $0\mathrm{.}0033$ inches versus a target of $0\mathrm{.}0013$ inches. The company is committed to resolving the issue quickly. Therefore, senior management has put together a Green Belt DMIAC team to begin work immediately. The project charter is shown below. Organization and Process Minus$1$ is a small organization but has a very diverse workforce. They have employees who are new to the golf ball manufacturing business as well as those who have been around the business for $35$ years. The more experienced employees were recruited from Minus$1$s competitors and came with a wide range of opinions on how to reduce scrap. Despite their differences, however, they are all committed to making Minus$1$ a successful player in the two$-$piece golf ball business. The key stakeholders with their responsibilities and stances on the current problem are as follows: Supervisors of Forming Center o Gary Thomas: Gary came up through the ranks of the Titleist organization as an apprentice. He acts on his gut feeling and does not wait for data and feels that DMIAC is a waste of time. o Sue Golic: Sue is a recent college graduate with a Green Belt certification. She believes in the DMAIC process. Operators o Operators with more than three years of experience want to act on gut feelings and not wait for data. These operators came from Titleist, Callaway, and Taylor Made. o Operators with less than three years of experience want to use data and facts to improve the process. They started their careers at Minus$1$ and align with the thinking of its head of manufacturing. Head of Manufacturing o Rick Watson: Rick is a certified Black Belt and previously worked at GE$.$ He brings a great deal of experience and support to the organization and also has experience in all areas of the manufacturing process. Rick will provide the Green Belt team with his expertise in areas other than the forming center area. Head of Quality and Improvement o Roger Byl: Roger is a Master Black Belt and a quality professional who came from Titleist. Plant Manager o Ron Burns: Ron is the founder of Minus$1.$ While not trained in Lean Six Sigma, he prefers to have data and facts before making decisions. He was instrumental in starting up three Callaway facilities during his career there.
