Preparing a roadmap for an innovative product launch
For this part of the assignment, assume that it is early September 1979 and that you are part of the senior leadership team at The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. You are part of a small group tasked with progressing the proposition of launching a new low-calorie cola beverage under the brand Diet Coca-Cola and/or Diet Coke. If such a name is adopted, it will be the companys first new Coca-Cola branded product since the first sales of the original Coca-Cola drink in 1886. [Remember Coca Colas product Tab had been marketed separately from the Coca-Cola brand.] It is hoped that the product might be launched in the summer of 1982. You may assume that the senior management structure of the Coca-Cola Corporation is given by Figure 1.2.

You should set out your suggestions looking ahead to the planned product launch. Your ideas do not need to be based on what really happened. Your responses to Task 1 will help you to complete the technology roadmapping first stage chart in Task 2.
The activities for Task 1 are as follows:
- Prepare a statement summarising the legacy and history of the Coca-Cola Corporation (as of September 1979). In technology roadmapping, this is where we start. (guide length 30 words)
- Prepare a product vision statement for 1982 and later. This should include the proposed name for your new product. For technology roadmapping it is important to know where we want to go. Your product vision should include some summarised thoughts as to technology and markets, including branding and product taste. This step will later help you to complete the Product vision section in the technology roadmapping first stage chart. (guide length 60 words)
- Use detailed bullet points to indicate three key technology Milestones and applications for this specific product affecting the journey to launch. (guide length 20 words)
- Use detailed bullet points to indicate three key Drivers and barriers for this specific product launch and related considerations. (guide length 20 words)
- Suggest three specific company roles that should be involved in the journey to product launch. Figure 1.2 may be helpful, but you should feel free to think of more detailed roles. This will later help you to complete the Staff functions and partnerships section in the technology roadmapping first stage chart. (guide length 30 words)
- Suggest three or more company capabilities and resources that will need to be considered and planned for the launch. This will later help you to complete the Capabilities and plans section in the technology roadmapping first stage chart. (guide length 40 words)
The guide length for Part 2 Task 1 is 200 words.
