FPC 1010: Math for the Arts PROIJECT Description The purpose of the projects is to merge the arts (fine, performing, and communications) with the mathematics concepts we have covered in class. You will have two options: For the final project, you will decide on two things, the OPTION (listed below) and the mathematical topic (also listed below). You will write about your experience of connecting the artistic piece and the mathematical topic you selected. The components of the written paper are listed on the next page. The rubric in which you will be graded is listed on the last page. I suggest you make sure you are following both the guidelines and the rubric to maximize your points on the project. Also, do not simply answer the questions in the guidelines. The questions are there to help you get started in writing about that section. Each section should be at least one paragraph long, not one sentence long! OPTION #1: Create an artistic piece based upon the mathematics concepts discussed in class. Topics include: e Reasoning e Sequences (Arithmetic or Geometric) o Fibonacci Sequence e Golden Ratio/Spiral Polygons Perimeter and Area of Polygons e Tiling o Tessellations (regular triangles and regular hexagons) e Transformations e Surface area of 3-D figures e Volume of 3-D figures OPTION #2: Use the mathematics concepts listed about to explore a real-world artistic piece. Each option must include the following components: 1. Introduction a. Why did you choose the option and the mathematics concept? b. How did you come up with your project? c. What was your inspiration? d. What is the relevance of the project to your future endeavors? 2. Methodology a. Explain how you developed your project. i. What steps did you take? ii. What were you thinking as you were creating the project? b. Show all calculations you performed for your project. 3. Results a. For OPTION #1, what was your final project? i. What were some challenges you faced in creating your project? ii. Did your work turn out the way you envisioned it would? iii. How would you improve your work? b. For OPTION #2, what did the calculations tell you about the artistic piece? i. How do your results impact the community? ii. Were you surprised with the results? iii. How does the results change your way of thinking about the real-world situation? 4. Conclusion a. Explain how this project can assist you in your potential career. b. How has this project influenced your thinking about mathematics and the arts? c. What were the benefits (for you) for doing this project? Format: e Cover page e Type, double-spaced, and 12-point font e 1-inch margins around the paper Grading will be based on: o Final piece e Final report e Presentation DESCRIPTION Narrative Development of the project Calculations involved Final Piece POINTS FOR W POINTS EARNED COMMENTS Summary of the piece Summary Benefits Final Score 50
