On June 27 Denning was smitten with another candidate whose great credentials were overlooked, and he decided to hire her instead. He called Smiley's number again on June 28, but he was frustrated to note that she still was not in. He left another voice-mail message advising that someone else more qualified had been chosen for the position. After the Canada Day weekend, Denning got a phone call from Smiley asking him, "What gives here? First you say I'm hired, then you say I'm not."
