Activity 10.1 Variation 1. If y varies directly as x2, and y = 2 when x = 1, find y when x = 10. 2. If x varies inversely as t, and x = 8 when t = 6, find t when x = 12. 3. If r varies jointly as s and t, and r = 8 when s = 6 and t = 4, find s when t = 16 and r = 24. 4. The wind force on a vertical surface area varies directly as the square of the wind velocity. If the pressure on a plate glass window is 30 lbs. when the wind velocity is 15 mph, what will the pressure be when the wind velocity is 45 mph? 5. A pulley with diameter 8 inches is running at 1452 revolutions per minute while belted to a 12-inch pulley. Find the speed of the larger pulley if the speeds of the pulleys are in inverse proportion to their diameters. 6. The load that a wooden beam of given length can support varies jointly as its width and the square of its height. A beam whose width is 4 inches and whose height is 2 inches can support a load of 880 lbs. Find the load the beam can support when turned on its side; in other words the width is 2 inches and the height is 4 inches
