Appendix L.(Graded Assignment): Reliability and Validity Assignments at THS
Evaluating selection instruments:
Instructions: This is a two-part assignment. First, discuss reliability and calculate reliability coefficients as well as standard error of measurement (SEM). Second, discuss validity, calculate validity coefficients, and explain and interpret the results. Please answer each of the questions below, which should include extensive details with in-text cites and please show your work for the calculations when appropriate. Note. Make sure you follow the instructions on the syllabus for preparing your assignment (e.g., professional appearance, a clear, consistent, and organized format, cover page, 1" margins, page numbers, reference page, headers for major sections, etc.) and edit for any grammar or punctuation errors. Submit two files:
One should be the Microsoft Word file that includes both the essay responses and the tables from the Excel file (embedded or pasted) in the report or as an appendix in the report. Please note, all of the information must be in this report. I will only use the Excel file to verify the analysis and will not use it to grade your report.
The second file must be the Excel file (same version as posted in Canvas) showing your calculations for the reliability and validity estimates and the actual SEM calculations. If you use regression to calculate the reliability and validity results, then add a tab in the Excel file and place those output files in a separate tab (one tab is fine for all of them). Please label the tab so I can easily find it and review your calculations.
If the Excel file is not included, I will only grade the qualitative answers regarding reliability and validity (e.g., what is reliability and 4 types, what is validity and 2 types of criterion-related validity studies, and provide some points for any concluding comments).
A. Reliability Assignment:
Discuss reliability. Define reliability, discuss minimum level of correlation needed, and explain what it is and why it is important to selection.
What are the various 4 types of methods for assessing reliability? Discuss each method briefly, explain the steps involved in calculating each, and explain any strengths or weaknesses of each. Some will have more details in the text and lectures than others, which is okay.
Calculate the following four reliability coefficients using the Pearson product-moment correlation formula, correlate the scores to determine the reliability coefficient (r). Show your work.
3. Calculate the interrater reliability coefficient for the Initial interview rating by the HR recruiter by correlating it with the Interview rating of supervisor.
a. What is the reliability coefficient
b. Should this selection instrument be used for selection purposes? Why or why not?
4. Calculate the interrater reliability coefficient for the interview rating of the Supervisor by correlating it with the Senior Management.
a. What is the reliability coefficient
b. Should this selection instrument be used for selection purposes? Why or why not?
5. Calculate the interrater reliability coefficient for the interview rating by the Senior Management by correlating it with the interview rating of the HR recruiter.
a. What is the reliability coefficient
b. Should this selection instrument be used for selection purposes? Why or why not?
