This homework will combine topics we have used throughout the course in a new way so that you can see the interconnectedness of environmental engineering. All of these problems will focus on different aspects of environmental engineering related to the construction of a new refinery (see figure). You are the primary environmental engineer in the nearby town so you are being asked to evaluate the environmental impact of the refinery along a variety of different paths. Since we're combining a lot of information, I've provided some helpful hints on where to go next. These hints will also help introduce you to the thought process you will go through in higher level courses.
Show all work, state all assumptions, and circle or highlight your answers. You may work with other students, but each person must turn in their own assignment.
(1 point) Oil refining is energy intensive, so the facility will be combusting residual oil they can't sell for energy on-site. The fuel oil has the molecular formula C10H20. Write a balanced complete combustion reaction for this fuel. (Hint: Incinerators oxidize 'fuel' in oxygen. Assume complete combustion and the only reactants are the hydrocarbon and oxygen.)
(1 point) If 2,000 gallons of oil (with a density of 0.85kgL) are combusted every day, what mass of CO2 is generated each day? (Hint, look at 1 and then think dimensional analysis.)
MWC10H20,% mole
MWCO2,mole
molar ratio
CO2 generated
mole CO2? mole oil
