Question Five (15 Marks)
In its quest to expand to other markets, Safaricom has a strategy to roll out its services in Latin America, beginning in the rural areas. In the expansion strategy, they have identified MPesa as the killer app to enable them gain entry. This is informed by their experience in Kenya where the mobile money app has been adopted by the rural semi-literate population. They therefore seek to begin rolling out their services to the mostly unreached traditional communities in the Amazon Forest. These communities have been hunter-gatherers but have been forced to interact with modern life because of the extensive logging and clearing of the forest for agriculture, in the process destroying their livelihoods. Before the 1980s, these communities had been completely cut off from modern life and had therefore been illiterate. In the last four decades, some missionary linguistic anthropologists have developed an alphabet for their languages and began teaching the communities how to read and write. While the majority are illiterate, the youth are beginning to learn how to read and write. Safaricoms plan seeks to introduce mobile phones and mobile money and related applications for supporting their livelihoods and improving their wellbeing. Describe, with illustration, the process for designing and developing usable and accessible financial mobile applications for these community members. (Hint: Be cognizant of the unique socio-cultural context) [15 Marks]
