Your role
The role will undertake independent teaching and research in the area of adaptation of ruminants to a changing environment within the context of agricultural production. Key responsibilities will include teaching animal science in the context of agricultural systems as part of Undergraduate and Masters courses, supervising Honours, Masters or PhD research students, and developing collaborations with researchers within and outside the School. The appointee will be expected to attract research grants from national/international funding agencies and actively contribute to the governance and collegial life within the School, across the University and, more broadly, outside the institution. You will possess modern and innovative teaching approaches, to inspire, engage and equip our students to tackle the grand challenges in feeding the world.
Your key responsibilities
Provide leadership in teaching by fostering excellence in curriculum development, coordination and teaching within the discipline and across the School. Provide leadership in the supervision of domestic/international Honours, Masters or PhD student research projects related to animal science or related subjects. Develop research collaborations, and apply for funding, across the broad scope of animal production systems, framed by an overarching interest in the adaptation of livestock systems to a changing environment. Enhance the research capabilities of the School by contributing scientific skillsets and technology that can be applied to the study of agricultural systems.
Build and promote effective working relationships with other stakeholders, including agri industry groups, farmers and other disciplines with the academic community. Promote The University of Western Australia through involvement in professional associations, conferences and other external activities. Actively contribute to the governance and collegial life of the School, the University and external organisations. Work within the legislative requirements of the University and support the University's commitment to equity. Other duties as directed by the Head of School.
Your specific work capabilities (selection criteria)
PhD in animal science or a related relevant discipline. Have a sound knowledge and understanding of the ruminant microbiome, genetic strategies to improve livestock resilience, biology of livestock adaptation and a demonstrated conceptual knowledge of ruminant production systems. Evidence of a commitment to high-quality teaching with a willingness to develop curriculum and a commitment to continuous improvement and enhancement of student experience, relative to opportunity. Willingness to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, supported by evidence of high-quality supervision or co-supervision, relative to opportunity. Experience with designing and leading field studies within both intensive and extensive sheep and cattle production systems. Demonstrated ability to define, investigate and solve complex problems using both fundamental and applied science. A good track record relative to opportunity of original research and/or industry impact in agriculture as evident through reports and scientific papers published in high quality peer reviewed international journals. Demonstrated ability to secure research funding, and of developing collaborations and liaison with industry, relative to opportunity. Demonstrated capacity to work collegially with evidence of effective leadership and teamwork, team building and mentoring. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, particularly with regards to diverse undergraduate and postgraduate student cohorts and industry. Knowledge, understanding and commitment to i) principles of equal employment opportunity, and ii) the health and safety of the work environment.
