The nature of human creativity and drive to improve has lead to consistent technological advances throughout our history. Those that are unwilling to accept their place in academia can be left behind, with the understanding that old technology will usually still have a place in learning. For example, online classes have been enabled through the internet and personal electronic devices. We now have access to entire libraries at our fingertips, but this has not made paper texts or in-person classes obsolete. It is simply another tool that has been employed successfully by many people to pursue education who would otherwise not be able to.
McVeys discussion about product driven assignments resonated with me. The purpose of classes are often to prepare students for the rigors of a career that follows them. Many times in my professional career I have been asked for a product, and seldom have I been asked to demonstrate how I produced it. If assignments are purely based on the result of the product the student creates, a resourceful student will use all the tools at their disposal to most effectively reach that end goal. I agree wholeheartedly that the methods used to teach writing will be much more helpful to students if they focus on the process. There are many steps that go into a polished written product including planning, brainstorming, drafting, editing, and more. It also includes characteristics that AI cannot replicate, such as personality and creativity. AI is at the end of the day another tool created by humans, which means it is fallible. Like other tools, it is not a one size fits all that can be thrown at any problem to produce a solution, simply one option of many to help reach a goal. It is rapidly becoming part of many areas such as education, business, art, and science. Like all tools it should be discussed and taught how to be used responsibly with the ultimate goal of educating students for success in their future endeavors.
