Special Problem: Presenting Company Analysis with Financial Statements and Ratios Objective: Students demonstrate ability to prepare an Income Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings, and Balance Sheet in proper form* using Excel, create common-size financial statements, and calculate key financial ratios. In addition, students develop a written assessment of the resulting data in a concise, email-structure format.

Directions:

1. Excel file work: You must use cell referencing for the input data. You must use Excel for all calculations. You will be graded on accuracy of your calculations, Excel use in calculations, formatting, and appearance. Be sure to remove grid lines.

A. Financial Statements: Use the data sheet tab to create the following three statements.

i. Income Statement for Year ended 2019. *See Table 2.1 in text for example. Proper form excludes row numbers and all text is in black. See rubric for details. Check figure for Earnings Available to Common = $29,363

ii. Statement of Retained Earnings for Year ended 2019. *See Table 2.2 in text for example.

iii. Balance Sheet as of December 31, 2019. *See Table 2.4 in text for example Check figure for Total Assets = $336,523

B. Financial Ratios: Use the 2018 and 2019 financial statements to calculate the ratios specified on the Ratio Analysis tab.

C. Save your Excel file. You will need to submit it or the assignment cannot be graded.

2. Write-up in email format: Open the Template for the Email.

A. In the TO: section please make up a professional name for your boss or use your professors name.

B. In the Subject line: Insert subject of your message. Be clear what you are presenting to encourage your boss to open and read your email below. DO NOT use Special Problem Write-up

C. In the box, compose an email to a supervisor that evaluates the strengths and weaknesses noticed in the trends of the financial statements and common-size statements. In addition, note the trends in the ratios and how the 2018 results compare to the industry average.

D. Paste the financial statements (A-C) at the end of the WORD document as pictures. Be sure to remove grid lines on the page before copying and pasting to Word.

E. Check the email you wrote in step C to make sure that you:

1. Used good business writing subject line should be short and informative, first paragraph of writing should be concise, last paragraph should be a conclusion that restates primary points. Be sure to include both a strength and a weakness in your summary. See rubric for details.

2. Made reference to the attached financial statements.

F. Submit both the Excel file and the Word email template via Blackboard. The assignment cannot be graded without the Excel file.
