This is another popular assignment with lots of positive feedback from students. You are to spend a day shadowing a salesperson and then write a reflection paper about the experience. You must find salespeople to shadow this semester. You may not use an experience you have done prior to this semester. You may not write about your own experience as a salesperson. You may not shadow in pairs or teams. Each student must conduct a unique shadow experience.

• What are some things you do in a typical day if you have such a thing?
• How do you find prospects?
• How do you prepare?
• How do you build rapport with a prospect?
• How do you transition from rapport building to uncovering needs?
• What is the most important part of the sales call?
• How do you know how to structure your sales presentation and what to emphasize?
• What kind of objections do you get? How do you overcome them?
• How do you deal with a tough customer?
• What closing techniques do you use if any?
• What does follow up with a customer look like?

• What are your biggest challenges?
• What are your biggest rewards?
• How do you organize your day?
• How do you stay on schedule?
• Do you ever get down if you are not selling?
• How do you deal with that?
• How important is integrity?
• What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in sales?

Be sure to probe, ask follow-up questions, ask for explanations of anything you dont understand.
