Steven is the General Manager of Roda-roda Sdn Bhd, which is an automotive assembly company. Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, the company must lay off some of their subordinate employees. Laying off the staff has affected them being shortage of staff at certain stages of the work process. After considering several alternatives to solve the problem, the Company has decided to change the system of working hours. Before the pandemic, the Company was on 9.00am to 6.00pm working hours. But with the problem of the pandemic COVID19 and the Movement Control Order (MCO), the Company has decided to work on job rotation from 9.00am to 9.00pm from Monday to Saturday.
Unfortunately, the plan faced resistance from the existing subordinate employees. They have disagreed to the job rotation as considered by the management. The problem lies mainly in terms of the subordinate employees is not readily available to accept the change process.
Your task:
If you are the General Manager of Roda-Roda Sdn Bhd, analyse thoroughly the situation and provide four alternatives approaches to deal with the situation. Assess the pros and cons associated with the four different approaches as considered by you and assesses the level of conflict associated with each of them. Out of the four approaches, select one approach which you would recommend it to be implemented by the Board of Directors.

The problem of laying off of employees is term as under-Staffing as it leads to a situation where work is more than the employees can do it. As a General manager of Roda-Roda Sdn Bhd, I would like to suggest following alternatives: *To train Employees so as to make them aware of their expertise and know their better skills to apply in work so as to complete take in effective and efficient manner. * To do freelancing or on contract basis which actually minimizes the cost and also contribute towards reducing work pressure in an organisation. * one thing can also be done like replace man Power with Machinery wherever possible so as to finish the task in timely manner. *It is advisable to open a company up to apprenticeships, co-op work placements and internships, which can help cultivate the next generation of skilled workers.
Out of the four approaches, I would like the company to follow the first one as it would be economical and it would make existing employees to sharpen their skills and knowledge. It would make them more confident towards the organisation and they will work whole-heartedly that will brings the quality of work.
