Q1- Discuss the importance of the purpose statement in any research, and distinguish between the purpose statement and the significance of the study, including relative to your current/actual research proposal.

Chapter 6 in our reading is dedicated to the purpose statement for our research project. Creswell & Creswell (2022) state that the purpose statement "establishes the intent or objective of the research study." The purpose statement can be just one sentence or it can be expanded into a paragraph or two to assist the reader with understanding the topic that will be discussed. It lays out the intent, and serves as a framework for the rest of the study. Having a purpose statement allows the researcher focus on key points to elaborate on topic goals to be achieved to assist the researcher and reader.

The difference between the purpose statement and the significance of the study is that the significance discusses the "why" behind it, not just the "what." The significance of the study focuses on the impact of the research gathered and how it can be incorporated into life. Chapter 6 goes on to describe different types of purpose statements in regards to the type of research method being used. I will focus my purpose statement and use the layout described by Creswell & Creswell (pg. 133, 2022) for the mixed methods approach, to contain the overall intent, information, and integration of the quantitative and qualitative strands.

For my research proposal my purpose statement will state my objective (to discover why enlistment and retention rates are dropping), and how I intend to gather my research. By combing data from studies (quantitative) and interviews (qualitative) into a clear purpose statement, I will get the main points of information out early to give my reader a good understanding on my study aim. The significance of my study will be the impact it has on the federal government in terms of defense for our country and the possibility of increasing those rates. Combing the data as Creswell & Creswell (2022) suggest will help to build the insight to have "a more complete understanding of a research problem."
