Please provide an executive summary for the below case study.
Peter Mayhew had recently been appointed as the Director of Logistics at LLamaFresh, one of the leading grocery chains in the US. Over the last few years, cost and investment in transportation has garnered a lot of interest from the management at LLamaFresh. Peter's first task at the job was to improve this part of the business. Peter spent the first few weeks at LLamaFresh asking questions and observing how processes worked. His past experiences had taught him well that he first needed to understand the business and how things operate before he could go in and make big changes. What he observed caught him by surprise! For such a large company, most of the route design and logistics decisions were based on spreadsheet analysis. Right away Peter could see how this outdated approach was causing some specific challenges: Slow to react to changes in customer demand High effort to respond to requests for proposal (RFPs) in order to win new customers High manual effort to run daily routes No systemic analysis of overall network There was definitely a much better way to do things. At his previous company, Peter had leveraged the latest in optimization technology to evaluate their logistics design and make informed data driven decisions. If they were to improve their decision-making process and identify savings in this business, they were going to have to make an investment in technology to see some returns. Knowing that the management is conservative, Peter knew he would have to prove the value of such a large investment in technology. Peter wanted his team to conduct a proof of concept using LLamasoft's Supply Chain Guru application. He was planning to use the results from this study to support his presentation to the board requesting funding for the software and training to improve overall operations.
