Question 7: (Case study) TATA Motors Limited, an Indian automobile manufacturing company launched the world cheapest car, Nano with a cost price of $ 2500 and had ambitious plans to build a factory to manufacture this car in the Singur region of West Bengal state in India. TATA promised to generate many jobs for the people of the region, develop its infrastructure and contribute to the socio-economic improvement of the region. The company needed nearly 1000 acres of land for the factory and since most of the land in that region belonged to farmers, TATA took the help of the government to acquire the land. The government used an old law to acquire (get) the land from the farmers at a cheap price by coercion (Strong pressure). The local farmers rebelled against the government/TATA Motors and forced the company to stop construction. The farmers did not want to give up the land because it was very fertile, and their livelihood depended on it. TATA Motors and the government tried their best to convince people about the benefits that they can get out of this project and even offered many local farmers' jobs in the factory but still majority of the farmers were not convinced (sure). Some of the benefits promised were schools, hospitals, small industries, and infrastructure. Due to the intense pressure from the local farmer's TATA Motors stopped construction work, handed over the land back to them, and shifted them factory to another state. This resulted in a huge loss to the company. 1- Using the case study, discuss the ethical strategy that TATA applied (5 marks).
