THEC Spring 2025 "Should Dentists Treat despite Medical Contraindications?" Case # 1 Dr. Van is a general dentist. She is doing a series of restorative procedures for Mr. Smith. When Mr. Smith arrives for some fillings, Ms. Gray, the dental assistant, routinely checked his blood pressure on his arrival. It was 182/98. She informed Dr. Van. In reviewing Mr. Smith's record, Dr. Van noted this his blood pressure was recorded above 140/90 at his last three visits. She sat down to review these findings with Mr. Smith. She informed him that his blood pressure was too elevated for elective dental care and encouraged him to visit his doctor for diagnosis and intervention. Mr. Smith begged - "My teeth hurt. Please do the fillings. I don't even have a doctor." How should Dr. Van reply to Mr. Smith? What action steps would you recommend?
