THE STARBUCKS CASE.
On the afternoon of Apr 12. 2018, two African-American men Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, arrived at a Starbucks location in Philadelphia for a real estate business meeting with a friend named Andrew Yaffe. Two men then asked a store employee to use the restroom; however, they were refused to use the restroom. When asked, they were simply told that its reserved only paying customers. Furthermore, as a common practice, the men occupied a table without making any purchase which is a usual thing at a Starbucks location. However, the store manager objected and asked the men to leave. When the guests declined, and argued, the store manager called the police despite knowing that they dont possess any threats. Upon arrival, the police handcuffed the men and took them away when Andrew Yaffe arrived for the meeting. Soon after they got arrested Melissa DePino (@missydepino) posted a video of this incident and it soon went viral. Many started condemning the incident and calling it an act of racial discrimination. No business should violate the federal Civil Rights Act in terms of any racial bias or discrimination. Before this incident, Starbucks did not have a store-wide policy asking customers to leave. It was at the discretion of each store manager. Additionally, the incident led to a social outcry with people demanding action against the alleged racial bias. Starbucks CEO issued a formal apology statement and met with Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson in person. The CEO announced that they would shut down their stores on May 29 to conduct an anti-racial bias training for their 175K employees. On their side, the Mayor decided to do a city review of Starbucks policies. At the same time, the Police Commissioner admitted that police could have handled the situation better. However, a press statement was released where he said These officers had legal standing to make this arrest, Commissioner Ross said. These officers did absolutely nothing wrong. They followed policy, they did what they were supposed to do, they were professional in all their dealings with these gentlemen. I will say that as an African-American male, I am very aware of implicit bias, he continued. We are committed to fair and unbiased policing, and anything less than that will not be tolerated in this department. (Ross). The Manager in question left Starbucks in May 2018. She admitted to racial bias. Starbucks made changes to their policy and announced that they would welcome everyone at the store irrespective of any purchase. Employees can call 911 only in cases of disruptive behavior or immediate danger to employees or customers. Despite the above steps and measures, racial bias incidents continue to happen in the Starbucks stores in the Philadelphia area. As part of the policy changes, some Starbucks locations removed the in-store seating arrangements as a defensive design to dissuade people from lingering in the store. The company denied any bias and attributed the changes to overcrowding.
