Please read the following case study and answer the questions
You are a small business owner and have been in business for 3 years. Your business grew quickly and you went from being the only person doing everything to having a team of 3 employees - Romar, Beth and Jake. Because the business grew so quickly you hadn't yet had a chance to think about policies or formalizing day to day procedures, or putting together an onboarding or training program. You are busy and figured you hired some good people and you want to just leave them alone and they will figure out what needs to get done. (You remember days of being micro-managed by your former bosses and vowed you wouldn't be that kind of boss when you had employees.) This approach worked at first, but now you are noticing some problems and aren't sure what to do. Here is what you have been noticing the last few weeks about your staff:
- Beth, who was so enthusiastic when she first started, has been late 4 times in the past two weeks, and you noticed even when she is at work she isn't performing the way you hoped.
- Romar and Jake don't seem to get along anymore but you aren't sure why and have decided to just stay out of that, although there does seem to be some tension around the workplace that you would rather wasn't there.
- You know that you have given Romar more responsibility than you originally mentioned in his interview, but he seemed okay to take on the tasks when he started so you thought it would be fine. Now you notice he isn't doing those extra tasks anymore but hasn't spoken to you about it. You don't know what is going on and wonder if he just doesn't want to work here anymore.
- You overheard Jake on the phone complaining to his friend that he was frustrated at work but that you didn't seem to notice or care.
- You decided to order pizza for lunch last week for everyone but that didn't seem to help.
You leave work at the end of a long day and wonder what you are going to do about this.
1. What strategies could you have used in the hiring and interviewing process when hiring Romar to better align the job posting to the tasks he ended up actually doing? You can use strategies mentioned in the text and ones discussed in lectures. (5 marks)
2. Provide two different principles from How to Win Friends and Influence People that might help you address Beth being late. Be specific how the principles relate to Beth and the case study. (5 marks)
