There are many factors that go into giving a company a sustainable competitive advantage. First is checking to see if the capability is valuable. Next is looking at the competition and seeing if the product is rare. Next is to see how much it would cost to copy the product. If it is cheap that means it is not as rare as you need the product to be. Next is to see if the capability is nonsubstitutable which means that it does not have strategic equivalents. If you have all of these you will have an advantage on the competition and show above average returns if the product is valued. This is very important to be aware of because if you product is something that anyone can make or get a hold of then your value will go down. If you have a product that is cheap to imitate you will have lots of competition and you would have to come up with a different strategy to set your product apart from the others. Apple does this with Windows all the time. They essentially have the same product but Apple charges a lot more and has been able to make a marketing strategy showing that they have the superior product and it is well worth the money. Sustainability in the long term has worked out for Apple and its marketing. It has been able to stay ahead of Windows in sales and in the cool factor.
