For this discussion, I chose two amazing pieces of architecture, the Colonnade and Court of Amenhotep III in Luxor, Egypt (built around 1300 BCE) and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey (built in 532-35 CE).
The Colonnade and Court is classic ancient Egyptian architecture with huge papyrus shaped columns in a post and lintel design, forming a grand open court. It was used for religious ceremonies, and its layout helped guide people through sacred rituals. The symmetry and towering columns really give it a sense of power and divine presence.
Hagia Sophia, on the other hand, is a mix of central plan and basilica style. Its massive dome (supported by pendentives!) and glowing natural light makes it feel like it's floating. Originally a church, then a mosque, and now a museum, its design has always been about connecting people to something bigger, spiritually and architecturally.
Even though these structures come from totally different worlds, both use form to enhance function. One emphasizes processions and order, the other inspires awe through space and light. I'm fascinated by how each one tells a story just through its design.
