Johnston Funding Sources - CISNT
My goal is to obtain funding (through a grant) for a new program to help CISNT address the problem of malnutrition and how that affects at-risk students. This new program will be called CISNT Food For Thoughts Program. With proper funding, we can not only provide healthy food, but educate at-risk students about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. There are several agencies that address hunger and provide school lunches to underprivileged students. At-risk students often lack the resources and information to ensure they eat healthy, which impacts their overall performance in school. This program will ensure these students have access to the sustenance and resources they need (beyond just being provided with free or discounted lunches), in school as well as outside of school. All students deserve proper nutrition, and the following 3 organizations are possible sources of the necessary funding to help CISNT institute this new program to provide healthy food to at-risk students.
#1 USDA Farm to School Grant would provide funding to support efforts that improve access to local foods in schools. Locally grown foods are more nutritious than the processed foods often provided to the underprivileged as a means of simply not starving. The benefits here would be twofold since the addition of learning agricultural and farming trades could be incorporated into after school programs already offered by CISNT.

#2 HHS Action for Healthy Kids Grant. Health and Health Care in Schools provides this funding for resources to implement health and wellness practices that help students eat better, stay physically active and be better prepared to learn.

#3 Apples4Ed can fund the implementation of a healthy snacking program designed to support students in a creative and relevant way. The U.S. Apple Association, in partnership with the School Nutrition Association and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, will fund five healthy snacking initiatives on school campuses across the United States in 2019.
