CLC - West Coast Transit Case

There are two main types of conflict: substantive and emotional. Substantive conflict is defined as a disagreement over ends or goals to be pursued, and the means for their Accomplishment. While an emotional conflict is an interpersonal difficulty that arises over feelings of anger, mistrust, dislike, fear, resentment, and the like. In this instance, the situation consisted of both substantive and emotional conflict. The management team was dealing with a substantive conflict by being overwhelmed with the companys success or failure. Their resources were scarce, and their time was limited, and the employment of many workers depended on their actions. They also encountered emotional conflict because the issue dealt with coworkers getting upset with one another. Tanney must attend counseling on a regular basis and as a result cannot attend to after-work meetings. Denson, another team member, decided to comment on her inability to attend these meetings by calling her family problems a complaint. Their responses toward one another were emotional and this was in result of the substantive conflict. Denson was offensive because the team was in a stressful situation and had limited time to get their project accomplished.
