Cronbach's alpha is the most common measure of internal consistency (“reliability") for measures. It is frequently used when we have several Likert scale questions from a survey, and we wish to determine if the scale is reliable. Let us assume we are doing a study on citizen trust in government. We will develop an index variable to be used as our dependent variable. Our dependent variable is created by asking our subjects respond to 5 statements (Stat1 through Stat5) on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = completely disagree and 10 = completely agree). Most of our statements resemble the follow: "I trust my government to do the right thing.” Table 1 (p.3) is the responses from our subjects. Enter these responses into SPSS and run a Cronbach's alpha test of all the variables to determine if our measures are internally consistent. To run a Cronbach's alpha test on SPSS: 1. Go to "Analyze" > Select "Scale" and then "Reliability Analysis" 2. Select the variables used in your composite measure > Click "Alpha" under "Model" 3. Click "Statistics" > Under "Descriptives for", check "Item", "Scale", and "Scale if item deleted" 4. Under "Inter-item", check "Correlations" > Click "continue" > "OK" to execute the analysis Table 1.
