Question 1[5 point]
An ice cylinder at -20C is falling from 12,000m in a horizontal orientation, where the surrounding air temperature is 10C. The cylinder is 1 m long and 5 cm in diameter. Ice surface emissivity is 0.9. Consider it is nighttime, so ignore solar radiation.
Find the convection heat transfer coefficient (2)
Find the time taken for the cylinder to reach ground assuming its shape remains intact (1)
Does the ice begin melting before it reaches the ground? if so, how much melts before it hits the ground - once again assume that the shape remains (2)
Hint: You can find the properties of both fluids using EES, or the back of your heat transfer textbook. You can google them if nothing works, but do not use random values that are way off.
