Think like a Project Manager
Project Managers often have to develop documentation and materials with little information available. They need to be able to use their skill and knowledge to develop a strategy or a plausible scenario for the next steps of the project. Think through the background information (...discuss in your Case Study Groups if you want to make use of that option) and add to the case in the areas that are not fully developed (for example, the business goals, or the expected benefits.) Make these as realistic as you can, given your knowledge of business and using what you've learned in the BASAM program so far.
Assignment #2 Instructions:
- You are the project manager for St. Jude's Orthopedic expansion project. Put yourself into the project manager's shoes.
- Assignment #2 requires you to complete Tab 5 ONLY.
- Complete the Cost Estimates tab (Tab 5) using the information in the Case Study AND the additional information provided below.
- Work with your Project Discussion Group in the Case Discussion Area to share the research part of this assignment.
- Some of the project costs need to be researched by looking on the internet to find the costs of the various items. There are suggested web sites in the Case Study Document.

You have been given some information in the case study about how may computers, etc. Here is more detail on the cost estimates:
- For the Orthoview software, use the following information: The software costs $5000, and the licensing for each year is $1000 (including the first year).
- Assume that you do not need to purchase the Microsoft Office software. This cost is part of the operations of the hospital and there are enough licenses for everyone already.
- Time for out-sourced computer experts to install the equipment is assumed to be $20,000.
- Time for the out-sourced trainers for Orthoview is 60 hours at $115/hour
- Hospital volunteers will lead the Office software training. There is no associated cost for this work but you should put it on the budget as a "zero" line item.
- All of the data in Tab 5 are placeholders. You do not need to organize the information by phase as is shown in the spreadsheet, but you can, if you wish.
- Here are the required rows in your estimates:
- basic computer equipment for each room (laptops, desktop, mice, keyboards, printer/fax)
- medical monitors
- consulting room carts
- training costs
- installation costs
- taxes
- annual maintenance and licensing costs
- any other costs that you feel are relevant
