There are three fundamental concepts and principles of the American legal system; Law, the Rule of Law, and Property. Laws are a set of rules that lets us know what we can and cannot do in both, our personal lives and business. In business, laws provide a set of rules in which your organization must adhere to. The Rule of Law is defined by four universal principles and under the rule of law laws are made generally and equally. Property is defined as ownership and is the broadest of the three concepts. In business, property provides ownership and control.
Ethics are defined as, "A systematic statement of right and wrong together with a philosophical system that both justifies and necessitates rules of conduct (Pagnattaro, Cahoy, Magid, O. Lee Reed, & SHEDD, n.d.)." The law is based on ethical principles by way of providing a set of rules and regulations that are equal, fair, and just to all parties involved, as defined by the Rule of Law.
I do not feel that corporate ethics have worsened in recent years. In reading about historical business practices, I have established that there are many more rules and regulations for businesses to adhere to today, than in the past. These have been put into place due to matters in the past. I believe that there were many more ethical issues in the past, but media, specifically social media, has provided a free platform for anyone to expose the wrongdoings of businesses. Therefore, I believe that media, in general, has led to the ease of exposing these ethics violations.

The American legal systems two fundamental concepts and principles are common law and civil law. Common laws are put in place by judges decisions precedent this is when a court has resolved a similar case in the past this will make it bound to follow the prior decision. Common law relies on the statutes that are passed by the legislatures. Civil law places greater emphasis on the legal code crafted by the legislature. Alexandra Twin (2021), Business ethics is the study of appropriate business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial subjects, including corporate governance, insider trading (Links to an external site.), bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities (Twin, 2021). Corporate governance is based on ethical principles, and corporate governance is the rules by which businesses are operated, controlled, and regulated. When a company does not inculcate ethical and moral principles, it can be listed as unethical practices that will cause trust issues with employees, shareholders, and company managers. Social responsibility by corporations has similar rights to citizens, meaning they have social obligations to their fellow citizens. This social service evaluation is mostly not mainly set up for corporations, but it is more about making a profit, not charity. Social responsibility was put into place and introduced to resolve these issues, and there is still a way that corporations are finding ways around this law. Some people may argue that business ethics are improving and necessary for a long-term view. There are many promising advancements like health and safety, discrimination, and labor regulation. Over the years, corporate ethics has been a top priority in companies. There is no way companies can avoid this plan in the corporate world.
