Where I Lived, and What I Lived For from Walden (1854) Henry David Thoreau

Where did I live? Thoreau has amazing detail when explaining where he lives he paints a picture that you can clearly understand with so much detail that you can see it in your mind almost as if you are there in the same place and time. It gives an image of his house and the woods that he lived in, how it was isolated and quiet. Thoreau explains how his house wasn't finished for winter, but it was protected against the rain; he mentions that it was the first house he owned and how it reminded him of a cabin he visited last year. I found myself suddenly neighbor to the birds; not by having imprisoned one, but having caged myself near them. He was so close to the birds he called himself a neighbor to them. He talks about how the wood rarely brought a villager. How he was seated next to a small pond. Thoreau clearly says he was in the woods many times but even if he didn't anyone could have assumed.

What did I live for? Thoreau never straight out said what he lived for this was not as clear. He mentioned God many times and says he bathed every morning as a religious practice. Both give me a reason to believe he was a religious man. He also mentions being awake, awoken, or re-awaken many times. The term reborn is commonly used in religion. So you could infer that he lived for God based on text clues, but Thoreau never said I live for God as some who lives religiously might say.
