5) I chose to answer this question as JFKs inaugural speech is the example for many rhetorical devices. Most notably, Kennedys use of chiasmus, And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country (Kennedy, line 25). Chiasmus is the rhetorical device where the writer changes the order of words to get more emotions. Kennedy achieves this as his order of words provokes the reader/listeners to question themselves and think strongly of the answer. JFK also uses the phrase, Let both sides as an anaphora to begin a few of his sentences. The use of an anaphora for this phrase emphasizes the importance of working together to readers/listeners. JFK also uses oxymorons throughout his speech, But this peaceful revolution(Kennedy, line 9). By putting the words peaceful and revolution in juxtaposition Kennedy conveys the fragility between peace and war. All of these devices make the reader take a step back and think more deeply about the topic. However, each of these devices causes the readers to think in a different way, the chiasmus causes the readers to question themself, the anaphora conveys importance, and the oxymoron conveys the conflict.
6) President John F. Kennedys inaugural address uses a high level of generality. His level of generality set his speech apart from his predecessors as he wasnt just speaking to the citizens of America but to the entire world. He then dissects his broad audience and addresses each separately making promises and giving warnings when needed. Throughout his speech he specifically addresses old allies, new states, bordering countries, enemies, and the nation as a whole. Kennedys use of generality allowed him to install hope and secureness in Americans, while instantaneously providing warnings and fear to any nations adverse to freedom.
