Please write type a 2-3 paragraph discussion response... I will rate the answer!
Economists offer a different way to look at the problem of defensive medicine by doing tons of research and coming up with a conclusion. They have reviewed patients records and estimated that only 2 to 3 percent of cases of medical negligence lead to a malpractice claim. The malpractice system is expensive in all the wrong ways, just like the rest of the health care system. Medical errors are always happening more often here rather than other rich countries. Maybe this is why we dont have the best health care here? The most recent research has found less of evidence of defensive medicine because most states havent made malpractice laws, making any upcoming research tricky. The amount of defensive medicine honestly cannot be found.
Like David Leonhardt said, the goal is to reduce malpractice lawsuits and also to reduce malpractice. The morale of doctors is affected by the malpractice system 100% which leads to why doctors give patients extra tests and treatments, which is going to be expensive, either way. One thing discussed in the article was reforming malpractice. What would that accomplish? Katherine Baicker(economist) said reforming malpractice system wouldnt be a bad thing, but it would not solve the crisis of mounting health costs. Others say its not going to solve any problems. We all want to see efforts in making less repeated medical errors, for a lower cost for doctors that dont make as many mistakes.
In my opinion, honestly if a doctor makes a huge number of REPEATED errors, who is going to want them as their doctor? Maybe they shouldnt be a doctor or change their health care profession. Thats my opinion though. I believe there should be tougher discipline because making repeated errors is not okay. Experts say that medical errors are the 3rd most common death in America. Something needs to change.
The best ways to change the incentives of our current system is to fix current problems with tougher discipline on only the ones that are making repeated mistakes, higher standards, and making all health care safer and cheaper for patients. Every incentive in the medical system is to do more. In the article, David Leonhardt said most patients have no idea how much their care costs are, and doctors are generally paid more when they do more. extra tests and procedures can help protect them from lawsuits.
