Purpose: To identify what specific teaching techniques are effective in a live learning environment.

There are two phases of this assignment an observation and a paper.

The Observation

Observe and participate in an adult learning environment in a community group, at school or at work. Examples are: Home Depot or Lowes home improvement class; a continuing education program at a museum, botanical garden or cultural institution; a natural child birthing class, tax preparation class at a private for-profit company, class at a gardening center, Main Line School Night course, etc. At best, you will want to attend the class more than twice, but if you feel that you have enough experience to write your analysis paper after one class, thats ok too. Observe and take notes describing the following:

The learning environment

How the learning was facilitated

How the instructor invited (or deterred) learner involvement

How participants contributed to the learning of the whole group

The Paper

Reflect upon and journal on the following questions:

What did you choose to learn and why?

What did you notice about the learning environment?

What did you notice about how the learning was facilitated? What techniques were most effective?

What role did the instructor play in the learning?

How did the instructor invite (or deter) learner involvement?

What did you learn about how you learn?

What did you learn/affirm about your learning?

How does the course preparation material support your discoveries?

Then prepare a 10-12 page APA-style paper, synthesizing your reflections, incorporating at least three citations from assigned readings and providing specific descriptions of:

1.Context: What you chose to learn and why

2.Learning environment: What you noticed

3.Facilitator: What role was played? How was the learning facilitated? How did the instructor invite (or deter) learner involvement? What facilitation practices were the most effective?

4.Your learning process: What did you learn/affirm about your learning?

5.What theories apply? How does the course preparation material support your discoveries?
