Question: PROBLEM # 1 ( 6 0 Points ) : You are a staff engineer for a geotechnical engineering firm. As part of the geotechnical exploration

PROBLEM #1(60 Points):
You are a staff engineer for a geotechnical engineering firm. As part of the geotechnical
exploration for a project, several subsurface tests have been conducted. The general soil
profile encountered at the site, along with moist and saturated soil unit weights, is
summarized in Table 1. The groundwater table was encountered at 6 ft from the existing
ground surface.
Table 1. Summary of Soil Stratigraphy.
NOTES:
Depth from existing ground surface to the bottom of the soil layer.
Determine the total, pore pressure, and effective stresses in the soils from the ground
surface to the bottom of the deepest subsurface test (i.e. a depth of 80 ft ). Provide a plot
of these stresses with depth relative to the soil profile as detailed in class.
PROBLEM #2(10 Points):
You have just learned that a hydraulic gradient of 0.10 upwards exists at your project site.
Using this information, recalculate the effective stresses from the ground surface to the
bottom of the deepest subsurface test (i.e. a depth of 80 ft ). Plot these effective stresses
with depth. Briefly explain the effect of the upward water seepage on the effective stress
compared to the static conditions.
PROBLEM # 1 ( 6 0 Points ) : You are a staff
