Question: Problem 2 : A steel SAE Grade 5 , 1 / 2 in . - 1 3 UNC bolt is used in a 8 quantity

Problem 2: A steel SAE Grade 5,1/2 in.-13 UNC bolt is
used in a 8 quantity bolt pattern to clamp two steel
members together in order to resist a total 60,000lb
external tensile load. The Grade 5 bolt has threaded and
unthreaded portions of grip as illustrated (total 1.7in. grip).
The combined member stiffness (km) is 5.7106lbfin.
Consider the bolt pattern to be a nonpermanent
connection. The Modulus of Elasticity =30106.
Required:
a.(10) Determine the actual Bolt Stiffness (kb) for this application.
a.(5) Calculate the appropriate Bolt Preload (Fi) per bolt in units of lbf for this
application.
b.(10) Calculate the Bolt Load (Fb), which includes preload, that each bolt will
experience in this application.
c.(5) Calculate the Preload Torque (in-lbf) per bolt (using the Table 8-15 Torque
Coefficient) that you would specify on an installation drawing involving this 8
quantity bolt pattern for this application. Assume the bolt and nut are both
nonplated, black finish according to Table 8-15. Pg,450
d.(5) Calculate the Bolt Yielding Factor of Safety (nP) for this application.
