You are designing a liquid-liquid extraction column to extract ethylene glycol from water using furfural as a solvent. The feed to the column is 30mol% ethylene glycol /70mol% water (100 kmolh) and the solvent is pure furfural (100kmolh. Liquid-liquid equilibrium data for the water-ethylene glycol-furfural system has been provided (calculated using ASPEN properties, NRTL method, at 20C,1atm ). Please perform the following steps to model the column.
Plot the phase envelope on a ternary plot.
Plot the extract and raffinate compositions for an extract specified to have 18mol% ethylene glycol.
Find the number of theoretical equilibrium stages required for this separation.
Model this system using Aspen. For the unit operations (block) choose the Extract block (located under the "Columns" tab). Note that the heavier component should enter the top of the column and the lighter component the bottom of the column (if these are switched, the simulation will not converge). Use the NRTL property method. What is the % error between the specification for the extract composition (given in part 2) and the extract composition given by Aspen? Does the stage-by-stage calculation in Aspen agree with your graphical calculation?
