The plan below shows the conceptual plan for a building with perimeter bearing walls. Your client has asked you to design roof framing for this building and neatly sketch a schematic framing plan showing all member sizes.
Determine appropriate dead and live gravity loads. Neglect snow, rain, wind, and seismic loads.
Verify appropriate stress and deflection limits. Use Doug Fir-Larch #1.
Assume bearing stresses and connections to the walls are OK.
Assume the roof is approximately flat, but has adequate slope for drainage.
The architectural drawings suggest that the roof will likely be 3 ply felt w? gravel over 12 plywood, w? loose insulation and a gypsum board ceiling.
Members must be spaced at 24" o.c.
The architectural program allows one row of interior columns at 20'--" o.c. minimum spacing. You may add these columns if they help your design, but they are not required.
Calculate the average weight of your framing system in psf, not including the roofing sheathing, insulation, or ceiling (i.e. framing weight only).
Try to limit your calculation to 1 or 2 neat & legible pages.
