Question: Problem 3 - 1 ( 3 0 Points ) A new urban unrestricted access roadway is proposed for Lucas County, Ohio ( Toledo ) .

Problem 3-1(30 Points)
A new urban unrestricted access roadway is proposed for Lucas County, Ohio (Toledo). The proposed roadway will be 3
miles in length and the traffic mix is expected to consist of the following vehicle types:
Passenger Cars (Gasoline Fueled)-3,600 vehicles per day
Passenger Trucks (Gasoline Fueled)-1,200 vehicles per day
Light Commercial Trucks (Gasoline Fueled)-50 vehicles per day
Transit Buses (Diesel Fueled)-120 vehicles per day
School Buses (Diesel Fueled)-20 vehicles per day
, Single Unit Short-Haul Trucks (Diesel Fueled)-40 vehicles per day
The regional planning commission has asked you to help analyze the air quality impacts of the new roadway. The new
roadway is expected to open in the year 2025. The output from an EPA MOVES run for Lucas County for year 2025 has
been prepared in Microsoft Excel format (posted to Blackboard). Using this information:
[a] Prepare a table of emissions rates (grams per mile) for the urban unrestricted access roadway for each vehicle
type for the following pollutants: Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx).
[b] Using the emissions rates you developed in Part [a], calculate the total daily emissions (U.S. tons) of
Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) for the proposed roadway.
[c] You are informed that the regional public transit authority in Toledo is transitioning their bus fleet from diesel
fuel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel. The transition is expected to be complete by end of 2024 prior to
the opening of the new roadway. Re-calculate the total daily emissions of Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide
(CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) for the proposed roadway with CNG fuel type for transit buses. Discuss the
results. How does the change in fuel type affect the emissions on the new roadway?
[d] Use the "Transit Bus Upgrades and System Improvements" calculator tool from the FHWA CMAQ toolkit to
estimate the emission reductions attributed to the bus fleet transition described in Part [c]. Assume that the
current bus fleet is comprised of buses from the 2008 model year and please attach a printout from the
calculator to your assignment.
