Problem 5 The lab has decided to change the organization of the Core Lab. Instead of having hematology, coagulation, chemistry and blood bank in one room on the ground floor, the Core Lab specimens will be done in the routine laboratories of each department. You are a supervisor and have been given the job to organize the change over. The hospital lab has 7 floors. Each floor is dedicated to one department. The lab reception is on the ground floor. Chemistry is on the 3 floor. Hematology and coagulation is on the 5 floor. The Blood Bank is on the ground floor next to the reception. The emergency room is located at the other end of the hospital. There is a "dumb waiter" located next to the lab reception and on each floor down the hall from the actual testing lab. The lab manager has decided to install a security system so that people coming into the lab to deliver specimens and to do other business in the lab will have to ring the buzzer and someone inside will have to let them in 1. You will need to decide if the equipment being used in the Core Lab can be used in the main lab. How will you make that decision? See one of the previous problems for help. Ex. Will you have a dedicated instrument in the Chemistry section for just STAT samples or will they be done on the instrument already in the main lab? 2. Specimens will arrive in the lab reception and will have to get to the appropriate section in a timely manner. Remember, the lab is on 7 levels. What are some ways to organize this? How will the technologists know if the samples have arrived on their floor if the dumb waiter is down the hall? 3. How will the results get to the wards and the Emergency Room? There is an LIS system installed for the lab. If nurses or doctors have a problem or a question with a patient or sample, who should they call? - the department or lab reception? 4. The ER is yelling because the Chemistry lab has not gotten their results to them quickly enough. The Chemistry lab says that they do the samples as soon as they are received from the lab reception. Remember, there is a tum around time of 1 hour from when the sample is taken to the time when the result needs to be back to the department. Where could there be problems to stop this from happening? 5. During the day there are enough technologists in each department to handle all the work. On the night shift, there is one phlebotomist who also does the reception area. The phlebotomist is called out for blood draws around the hospital. Who will handle reception when the phlebotomist is not there? There are 2 technologists to do the work on the night shift and they must cover all the departments - hematology, chemistry, coagulation, and blood bank. How can this work without too much complaining? Problem 5 The lab has decided to change the organization of the Core Lab.
